New Service To Put Mothers On The Right Path

In a Victorian first, a specialist alcohol and drug withdrawal unit has been launched to help mothers get the treatment they need while still caring for their babies.

Minister for Mental Health Martin Foley was today joined by Member for Ivanhoe Anthony Carbines to open Uniting Care Regen’s Mother-Baby Alcohol and Other Drug Withdrawal Service in Ivanhoe.

The unit will deliver a tailored alcohol and other drug withdrawal program for mothers and babies up to 12 months old or walking stage.

While in the unit, mothers will receive full withdrawal services, and also develop strategies to reduce long term risks to their children, families and the wider community.

This will include providing extended support networks to mothers when they finish treatment.

Regen is one of the largest alcohol and other drug supported organisations in Victoria with a proven track record in counselling, support and education programs.

The Andrews Labor Government will provide almost $1 million a year to run the mother and baby unit.

In addition, the Labor Government is also investing $9.6 million over four years to expand the Families where a parent has a mental illness program across Victoria.
