Important Funding for our Community Legal Service
Anthony Carbines, Member for Ivanhoe today announced Banyule Community Health (formerly known as West Heidelberg Community Legal Service) will receive a $199,000 funding boost as part of a grants program under the Andrews Labor Government.
The $199,000 of funding over two years will help Banyule Community Health to provide vital legal assistance to vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the area.
The funding will include $100,000 to maintain and consolidate a part-time position for a dedicated family violence lawyer over two years. Since November 2016 the Family Violence Service has provided assistance to more than 60 women and their children experiencing family violence.
The remaining $99,000 will enable employment of an experienced family lawyer, to establish a Family Law Service, and will complement their family violence work.
Banyule Community Health is one of 38 community legal centres across Victoria to receive a grant under the Community Legal Centre Assistance Fund and the Community Legal Centre Family Violence Fund.
The grants – totaling $8.9 million – will help support more than 100,000 Victorians each year with free advice and support on a range of legal matters including family violence proceedings and family law disputes.
The Victorian Budget 2017/18 provided $24.8 million in new funding to help community legal centres across the state to deliver critical legal services and advice to Victorians.
